This image of Joan Augerot, a curriculum specialist, was taken at the first annual Conferencia - Chicanas en El Movimiento (Women in the Movement conference), held over three days at El Centro de La Raza on Beacon Hill. Ms. Augerot was a speaker at the conference. The event was an initial step in establishing a state-wide network for job listings, education opportunities, legislative lobbying, and support. Most of the women who organized the conference were employed, primarily in education. They said they often feel isolated from their ethnic "sisters."

Another hope for the conference was to bridge the gap between Chicanas in Eastern and Western Washington. Amalia Garza, an attendee, said, "Since we are so different, we can tap that many more talents. If we solve the practical problems, we can deal with the philosophical." The conference was hosted by the Chicano Division and MECHA at the University of Washington, and funded by the Chicano Mobile Institute through the University of Utah.
