In this image of Marta Cano, the Seattle Public Schools administrative intern discusses the first annual Conferencia - Chicanas en El Movimiento (Women in the Movement conference) held over three days at El Centro de La Raza on Beacon Hill. "The Chicana is in a double bind. We're treated as a minority within our own culture. People take it for granted that we're out in the kitchen making tortillas. We're trying to find who we are and where we are. This is not a liberation conference as much as an information exchange. We're feminists, but in the context of our culture."

Hosted by the Chicano Division and MECHA at the University of Washington, and funded by the Chicano Mobile Institute through the University of Utah, the event was seen as an initial step in establishing a state-wide network for job listings, education opportunities, legislative lobbying, and support. Another hope for the conference was to bridge the gap between Chicanas in Eastern and Western Washington. Amalia Garza, an attendee, said, "Since we are so different, we can tap that many more talents. If we solve the practical problems, we can deal with the philosophical."
