In this image of Rebecca "Becky" Hobbs, the University of Washington Minority Affairs Office staff assistant discusses the first annual Conferencia - Chicanas en El Movimiento (Women in the Movement conference), held over three days at El Centro de La Raza on Beacon Hill. The event was an initial step in establishing a state-wide network for job listings, education opportunities, legislative lobbying, and support. Ms. Hobbs was quoted as saying, "Employers don't seem to think there are any Chicanas in Seattle. We know others are out there and don't want to lose them. We want to keep Chicana talent here. But first we must provide some job-skill training, a log of information on day care, resume writing workshops - whatever is needed to get the Chicana out of the background."

Another hope for the conference was to bridge the gap between Chicanas in Eastern and Western Washington. Amalia Garza, an attendee, said, "Since we are so different, we can tap that many more talents. If we solve the practical problems, we can deal with the philosophical." The event was hosted by the Chicano Division and MECHA at the University of Washington, and funded by the Chicano Mobile Institute through the University of Utah.
