In this image, Seattle P.I. reporter James Wallace is accompanied through the bus tunnel by a Metro Transit inspector after the project was delayed because digging farther without stabilizing the soil could endanger building foundations. Most of the tunnel has a concrete structure; the wooden "whiskey barrel" structure at the right edge of the frame indicates a location where a terminal will be built. The Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel (also Metro Bus Tunnel) is a 1.3-mile-long public transit tunnel that runs underneath downtown Seattle. Constructed between 1987-1990, the $455 million tunnel originally built for buses was updated to include light rail access in 2009.
