In this image Metro passenger Angela Nieto and her daughter Sophia wait for a bus inside a plywood bus shelter built by volunteers at 39th Avenue South and South Othello Street, near the Holly Park housing development. Fed up with Metro Transit delays in building a bus shelter, neighborhood residents built their own shelter, which City officials then complained didn't meet housing codes and that the builders didn't have a permit. After residents threatened to hold a dedication ceremony for the shelter to garner publicity, Metro quickly built a steel and glass shelter, which was dedicated on March 13, 1982.
