The Nisei War Memorial Monument at Lake View Cemetery in Seattle was erected in 1949, funded by many small donations raised in a massive door-to-door campaign in the Puget Sound region. The 21-foot-high column lists the names of 47 Japanese American soldiers from Seattle who were killed during World War II. Later, the names of nine Seattle-area service members of Japanese ancestry killed in Korea, Vietnam, and Grenada were added. Below the list of names is a quote from Franklin D. Roosevelt: “Americanism is a matter of the mind and heart; Americanism is not, and never was, a matter of race or ancestry.”

This photo shows four men attending the Nisei Veteran’s Committee service at the Nisei War Memorial Monument on Memorial Day, 1953. They are identified, from left, as Commander William Kuhn, Father A. Otani, Rev. S. Masunaga, and Seigi Kobara. Several wreaths lie at the base of the monument.
