Roberto Felipe Maestas (1938-2010) was a Mexican American activist in Seattle. He became involved in civil rights and antiwar protests in the late 1960s and in 1972 he led the occupation of the old Beacon Hill School, leading to the founding of the Chicano community center El Centro de la Raza, which Maestas led until 2009.

Estela Ortega (b. 1950) is a civil rights activist in Seattle. Ortega became politically active in the early 1970s, protesting the Vietnam War, advocating for the rights of agricultural workers, and registering people in low-income neighborhoods to vote. In 1972, she came to Seattle to join the El Centro de la Raza occupation after meeting Maestas and other Chicano activists at a national conference in El Paso. After the occupation ended, Ortega worked at El Centro and helped develop its programs in education, healthcare, voter registration and education, support for the poor, and Latino cultural events. In 2009, Ortega succeeded Maestas as director of El Centro de la Raza.

This photo shows Roberto Maestas and Estela Ortega being married by Semu Huaute, a Chumash elder. The wedding was held in the Beacon Hill School during the 1972 occupation. Ortega and Maestas remained married until his death in 2010.
