Order an ImageLegendary martial artist Lee Jun Fan (1940-1973), known professionally as Bruce Lee, was born in San Francisco, raised in Hong Kong, and attended college at the University of Washington in Seattle, before moving to back to California. During his time in Seattle Lee began teaching martial arts, and later his Hong Kong and Hollywood-produced films elevated the traditional Hong Kong martial arts film to a new level of popularity and acclaim, sparking a surge of interest in Chinese martial arts in the West in the 1970s.
This photo shows Bruce Lee and Sheldon Wong striking a Gung Fu pose. Around this time, Lee and his students would give a martial arts demonstration on an outdoor stage in Seattle's Chinatown - International District after the Chinese Community Night parade on August 3, 1961. The parade was part of the city's annual Seafair celebration and also featured Chinese opera, a Lion Dance, a fashion show, and the Chinese Girls' Drill Team.
