Seattle Keiro nursing home, designed to care for Issei (first generation Japanese immigrants), opened on September 30, 1976 at 24th Avenue South and South Massachusetts Street. Designed by Japanese Americans, the home sought to care for Japanese elders in a respectful and culturally familiar manner. In 1987, the nursing home moved to a larger facility at 16th Avenue and East Yesler Way. The home, renamed Keiro Northwest, closed due to financial difficulties in 2019.

Here, Midori Sugawara sits in her shared room at Keiro nursing home, surrounded by mementos of Japan. She was one of 63 people living in the home, which had a long waiting list. At the time, Keiro had just launched a $6.6 million fundraising drive for a new building. The new home, with 150 beds, opened in 1987.
