Clarence T. Arai (1901-1963) was a Seattle lawyer and photographer, also known for his role in the founding of the Japanese American Citizen's League (JACL). He founded the first Japanese American Boy Scout troop in 1920, an became the first Japanese American graduate from University of Washington Law School in 1924. Arai was active in local politics and served as vice president of the 37th Legislative District Republican Club and as a state delegate to the Republican convention. In 1934, he ran an unsuccessful campaign for a seat in the state legislature.

Here, Clarence Arai, center, watches Sam Yamaguchi and Haruo Hashiguchi play a game of ki-in, or Go, at the Seattle Branch of Japanese Ki-in. The club was located at 316 Maynard Ave, in the same building where Arai had an office.
