Painter and collagist Paul Horiuchi (1906-1999) was one of the artists of the "Northwest School," an art movement which combined natural elements of the Puget Sound area with traditional Asian aesthetics to create a novel and distinct regional style.
In this image, Horiuchi, then in his late seventies, sits next to a scroll which he painted in Japan at age 13, a year or so before emigrating to the United States. It was a gift for his father, and his grandfather served as the model.
