Painter and collagist Paul Horiuchi (1906-1999) was one of the artists of the "Northwest School," an art movement which combined natural elements of the Puget Sound area with traditional Asian aesthetics to create a novel and distinct regional style.
In 1961, Horiuchi received a commission to create a mosaic mural for Century 21, Seattle's World's Fair. Here, Horiuchi stands at the construction site, next to crates containing completed sections of the mural. The formal unveiling took place on April 21, 1962, just over a month later.
