Seattle Thunderbirds and Spokane Chiefs hockey players brawling, Seattle, December 21, 1986
Order an ImageThe Seattle Thunderbirds are a junior ice hockey team in the Western Hockey League, playing in the Seattle region since 1977. The team was called the Seattle Breakers through the 1984-85 season, when the team was bought by new owners and renamed the Thunderbirds. The Thunderbirds’ home arena is the ShoWare Center in Kent, and they were champions of the Western Hockey League in the 2016-17 and 2022-23 seasons.
In this image, referee Dean Forbes attempts to break up a brawl during the second period of a game between the Thunderbirds and the Spokane Chiefs. Thunderbirds player Joey Mittelsteadt and Darcy Loewen of the Spokane Chiefs wrestle in the foreground, while Shannon Travis (Thunderbirds) and Kevin Ekdahl (Chiefs) engage behind them and several more Seattle players watch from the bench. The fight resulted in three players from each team being ejected from the game, which Spokane won 8-5.
