Order an ImageThe Seattle Thunderbirds are a junior ice hockey team in the Western Hockey League. In Seattle since 1977, the team was called the Seattle Breakers through the 1984-85 season, when it was bought by new owners and renamed the Thunderbirds. The Thunderbirds’ home arena is the ShoWare Center in Kent, and they were champions of the Western Hockey League in the 2016-17 and 2022-23 seasons.
This image shows Petr Nedvěd (left) after he signed with the Thunderbirds for the 1989-90 season, with Thunderbirds general manager Russ Farwell holding Nedvěd's new jersey. Nedvěd was born in Czechoslovakia and defected to Canada in January 1989, in part in order to play hockey professionally. After one season with the Thunderbirds, Nedvěd was drafted into the professional National Hockey League, where he played for several teams across 15 seasons.
