In this image Tacoma-born author Frank Herbert (1920-1986) and his wife Beverly sit in the living room of their home. Mounted on the wall between the paintings (original works by John Schoenherr for a "Dune" calendar) is a control panel for the home's solar heating system. An avid alternative energy experimenter, Herbert created his own solar collector, wind plant, and methane fuel generator at his Port Townsend home. Herbert was the first science fiction author to popularize ideas about ecology and systems thinking, stressing the need for humans to think both systematically and long term. The same year this image was taken Jimmy Carter became the first president to install solar-energy panels at the White House.
