After Seattle School Board member Ellen Roe generated controversy with public comments on women, race, and poverty, a movement developed in protest. Some 300 people met at the Mount Zion Baptist Church on August 9, 1985 to begin a petition drive calling for her resignation and for a possible recall election. Representatives from more than 30 minority, feminist, church, and other community groups spoke at the meeting. Here, Central Area Motivation Program (CAMP) Executive Director Larry Gossett, wearing a button stating "ROE must GO", speaks in favor of Roe’s recall.
