In April 1975, the Friends of the Equal Opportunity Program of the University of Washington presented its second annual Charles E. Odegaard Award to Larry Gossett. In 1968, Gossett and other members of the Black Student Union had staged demonstrations on the UW campus in support of increased minority support. During one of these, BSU members occupied President Odegaard’s office. These actions stimulated the university’s attention to minority education.
Here, Larry Gossett holds the Odegaard Award. The award itself, entitled “Unity,” is a teak sculpture by Seattle artist George Tsutakawa. Established in 1973, and named for the former UW president, the annual award recognizes a person who best exemplifies leadership and energy in supporting diversity.
