Order an ImageIncreasing urban sprawl and environmental degradation led the Washington legislature to work on state-directed growth control measures. Unhappiness with their proposals led to the citizen-initiated Initiative 547 on the November 1990 ballot. The initiative would have would have required comprehensive land-use planning by all Washington state counties and the establishment of two regional growth control panels. Initiative 547 failed by a 3:1 ratio. Here, Sharon Donlan of Des Moines and some of her friends stand by Mercer Street on Election Day urging votes against Initiative 547.
The young man at the right urges the defeat of Initiative 35. This initiative, seen as anti-gay, would have overturned Seattle’s Domestic Partner and Family Leave ordinances. It was defeated.
