Beginning in October 1984, a series of demonstrations were held outside the home of the honorary South African consul in Madison Park to protest the South African government's polices of racial segregation known as apartheid.

In February 1985, ten Seattle minority organization leaders climbed the stairs to the consulate and tried unsuccessfully to meet with the consul. They were arrested when they refused to leave the premises. Four members of the group are shown here, with their wrists zip-tied. From left they are: Larry Gossett, then executive director of the Central Area Motivation Program (CAMP); Roberto Maestas, executive director of El Centro de la Raza; Sadikifu Akina-James, director of the East Cherry YWCA; and Kikora Dorsey, director of Mount Zion Preschool and Kindergarten.
