In October 1983, the United States invaded the nation of Grenada in the aftermath of a coup there. The invasion immediately provoked opposition in the US, with many demonstrators protesting against what they saw as another Vietnam War. Many who protested against the Grenada invasion were also active in movements to end US military intervention elsewhere, especially El Salvador. This image shows Maryamu Eltayeb (later Maryamu Eltayeb Givens) protesting outside the Federal Building. Her sign also references US support for the apartheid regime in South Africa.

Maryamu Eltayeb Givens was a leader of the Seattle Coalition Against Apartheid, which held a years-long demonstration at the South African consul's home in Madison Park. In addition to her activist work, Eltayeb Givens taught at First Place School. First Place is a school and social service organization focused on aiding children experiencing homelessness or crisis.
