The Reverend Donovan Cook of University Baptist Church addresses the crowd before an ecumenical march from the church to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The march was held in commemoration of the March 24, 1980 assassination of El Salvador's Archbishop Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez (1917-1980), and to protest U. S. aid to that nation's government.
The church, located at 4554 12th Ave. N.E., was the state’s first church to declare itself a sanctuary, eventually providing shelter and support for 70 Central American refugees, and was known for welcoming gays and lesbians to its pulpit and pews.
