On June 3, 1990, about 200 people gathered at Hing Hay Park to remember the victims of the Tienanmen Square massacre in Beijing one year earlier, when Chinese troops with tanks and assualt weapons killed hundreds, perhaps thousands, of protestors seeking democratic reform. Most of the attendees wore a white tissue flower, a traditional Chinese remembrance of the dead. As seen in this photo, many also carried the iconic photo of a lone figure standing in front of four tanks rolling into Tienanmen Square.

The event, sponsored by the Coalition for Chinese Human Rights, included a march through the streets of the Chinatown International District, and speeches delivered in both English and Chinese. Speakers at the event included two women who were in Beijing at the time of the massacre, Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen, who called for the end of U.S. support of repressive regimes, and Councilwoman Cheryl Chow, who urged the group to lobby Congress to overturn President Bush's renewal of China's most-favored-nation status.
