Order an ImageChinese American communities often hold a Lion Dance at the time of the lunar new year, or when a new business opens. The noise of the accompanying drums, gongs, cymbals, and fireworks is believed to drive away evil spirits and bring good luck.
This photo shows Sonny Kwan, left, and Kay Chinn lifting their lion costume during a lion dance to bestow good luck on businesses in the Chinatown International District in Seattle. Businesses put out "lucky money" for the dancers, some of which was donated to a Chinese American nursing home.
