Huge Chinese fans, like the one shown here, were used as decorations for a Chinese opera program held at Chong Wa Benevolent Society Hall to benefit the local Chinese School. Held on April 29, 1964, the program was presented by the Luck Ngi Musical and Opera Society of Seattle (also known as the Chinese Musical Club), and featured one hour of excerpts from the five-hour opera "Lady Precious Stream," followed by dinner. This was the first time the company had presented a short version of a Chinese opera.

Here, James M. Mar and Charles Jung place a giant fan at the Chong Wa Benevolent Society Hall prior to the performance. The woman looking on is identified as "Mrs. Donn Chinn" and is probably Myra Mar Chin, James Mar's sister, and mother of Donnie Chin (1955-2015), activist for the Asian-American community, and founder of the International District Emergency Clinic.
