In the 1970s, bicyclists began advocating for better protections for their rides, with improvements like dedicated bike lanes. In this photo, bicyclists take the inaugural ride on the four-foot wide bike lanes on the University Bridge. The opening ceremonies on October 12, 1983, attracted about 20 bike riders to test out the new route.

The rider at far right is Jerry Baker, a well-known and beloved figure in the Pacific Northwest cycling community. He was a founding member of Cascade Bicycle Club and Washington Bikes, and was instrumental in the creation of the bike racing velodrome in Marymoor Park. Baker was a leader of the cycling community from the 1970s until his passing in 2015. After his death, the Marymoor Velodrome was renamed the Jerry Baker Memorial Velodrome in honor of his contributions to Northwest cycling.
