Bicyclists beginning cross-country ride, Seattle, June 1, 1987
Order an ImageIn this image, bicyclists leave Myrtle Edwards Park in Seattle to begin the 3,397-mile TransAmerica Bicycle Trek to raise money for the American Lung Association. The 200 cyclists raised $5,000 each in pledges before starting the trip across the northern United States to Atlantic City, N.J., where they were scheduled to arrive July 16. The money raised by the cyclists, including 22 from Washington, will be used in the cyclists' local communities. Visible in the upper right corner of the image is the iconic PI globe atop the Seattle Post-Intelligencer building on Elliott Ave. W.
