Order an ImageIn 1966, Allied Arts of Seattle President Norman Johnson issued a challenge to members of the organization and to the larger arts community to expand the scope of community involvement in the arts. A panel was convened for the December 1966 Allied Arts meeting, to discuss the need for outreach to Seattle’s Black and Indigenous communities, particularly in the city’s Central Area. The panel, which included artists, musicians, architects, and activists, made specific proposals for action to engage new audiences and to develop programs for youth.
The panel participants, shown in this photo, were (clockwise from left) Douglas Q. Barnett, founder of Black Arts/West; jazz musician Floyd Standifer; painter Val Laigo; architect Leon Bridges; Jeanne Halliday, head of the Seattle All-American Indian Dancers; filmmaker Don McQuade; and actor and educator Roberta Byrd Barr.
