Mary Anderson at home, Maple Valley, March 2, 1982
Order an ImageThe annual Jefferson Awards recognize the special dedication, sacrifices, and significant accomplishments of individuals in service to the American people. A national program begun in 1972, Washington State has participated since 1977, selecting several winners from among state-wide nominees, then sending one of the winners to represent the people of Washington State at a national awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.
Pictured here during an interview at her Maple Valley home, Mary Anderson was one of seven Jefferson Award recipients for Washington state in 1982. Anderson was a mother and foster mother of seven children, and was honored for caring for the sick and disadvantaged, teaching Sunday School classes, and setting up clothing and food banks in her area.
