Order an ImageAvid outdoorspeople Lloyd Alva Anderson (1902-2000) and his wife Mary Gaiser Anderson (1910-2017) learned climbing techniques through a Mountaineers class taught by Wolf Bauer (1912-2016). The inability to find high-quality, inexpensive climbing gear led them and 21 mountaineering friends to found the retail cooperative Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI) in 1938, enabling them to buy gear in bulk from Europe and other places. Still based in the Seattle area, REI currently operates 149 retail stores in 36 states and employs over 11,000 people.
