In this image the Yakima Yearlings, a drum and bugle corp from the American Legion's Logan Wheeler Post #36 of Yakima, Washington, march in a parade on opening day of the American Legion state convention. This "Goof" parade was staged by the Voyageurs of La Societie des Forty Hommes et Eight Chevaux ("40 & 8") along Third Avenue in downtown Seattle. The costumes ranged from cross dressing to dressing like children and babies in diapers and bibs.
The American Legion, Inc., is a U.S. wartime veterans organization which organizes commemorative events, provides assistance at Veterans Administration hospitals and clinics, and lobbies on behalf of interests of veterans and service members. The 40 & 8 was founded in 1920 as an honor society within the Legion, and was described as "the fun-making organization of the American Legion." In 1959 the 40 & 8 became independent of the American Legion and continues to be involved in charitable causes.
