Rev. Dr. John Hurst Adams (1927-2018) was the pastor at Seattle’s First African Methodist Episcopal (FAME) Church from 1962 to 1968 and a leader in the city’s civil rights struggle. He chaired the Central Area Civil Rights Committee, made up of the heads of the local civil rights organizations Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), NAACP, and Seattle Urban League. The Committee was effective and unique because it had a unified front pressing for citywide racial reform. Rev. Adams also co-founded the country’s first war on poverty agency, the Central Area Motivation Program. In 1968, Reverend Adams was moved by his Bishop to serve as pastor of Grant AME Church in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles. After 22 years as a pastor, he was made Bishop in 1972. He retired from active service in the church in 2004, having risen to national prominence as a religious and civil rights leader.
