In this image two members of the Husky men's rowing team sit outside what appears to be the crew house on the University of Washington campus. Both men were coached by the legendary Alvin M. Ulbrickson (1903-1980) and Thomas Bolles (1902-1978), racing in boats built by George Pocock (1891-1976). This famed period in UW rowing history was featured in Daniel James Brown's bestseller, "The Boys in the Boat," about "nine working class boys who stormed the rowing world, transformed the sport, and galvanized the attention of millions of Americans."
Gordon Belgum Adam (1915-1992), on the left, was a member of "The Miracle 9," who competed in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, winning the gold medal as a member of the American boat in the eight-oared competition. Raised in Everson, Washington, he graduated in 1938 from the UW with an engineering degree, then worked at Boeing in the production department. He retired in 1977 and moved with his wife to Laguna Hills, California.
Norman A. Turay (1916-2003), on the right, did not compete in the 1936 Olympics, but was a member of the talented junior varsity team. Norm grew up in Seattle's Wallingford neighborhood, and graduated in 1942 from the UW Law School. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces in WWII, and continued work as a lawyer in West Seattle after the war.
