"Day Without Art," a project of the arts organization Visual AIDS, launched on December 1, 1989 as "a day of action and mourning" in which thousands of arts institutions and organizations around the world joined together to demonstrate the power of art to raise awareness of the ongoing AIDS pandemic. In this image Luis Clark, groundskeeper for the 1001 Building in Seattle, cleans cigarette butts from around Henry Moore's sculpture "Vertebrae," which is wrapped in a black plastic shroud in honor of artists who have died of AIDS.
