Seattle General Hospital was located at 909 Fifth Avenue in downtown Seattle from 1900-1971, later merging with two other local hospitals to become the Swedish Medical Center. Considered one of the best teaching hospitals in the region, 598 student nurses were trained at the hospital's School for Nurses between 1897-1938.
In this image four nurses or nursing students pose on what looks to be the roof of the hospital. One of the women pictured here is likely Joan (Wappenstein) Davis (1892-1954), who graduated the nursing school in 1915 and served in the Army Nurse Corps during WWI. Miss Wappenstein's mother, Minnie (Benn) Wappenstein (1871-1965) was the first white child born in Aberdeen, and her father, Charles W. Wappenstein (1858-1931) was Police Chief of Seattle in 1910.
