Founded in 1889, the Puget Sound Bridge and Dredging Company, later Lockheed Shipbuilding and Construction Company, worked on many important construction projects in the Pacific Northwest. During World War I, they were commissioned to create naval vessels, including the steam-powered cargo ships shown here. Construction on U.S. No. 1116 (second from left) was canceled as it was too late to see service in WWI. U.S 1115 (far left) was later used in the trade between British Columbia and Australia.

The photographer, Marvin D. Boland (1873-1950), was a Tacoma based photographer who owned several photographic studios and took many pictures of industry, architecture, and other Tacoma sights during the first half of the Twentieth Century. He died in 1950 in while taking pictures of Navy ships in Bremerton.
