Pacific Stone Company was founded by the Swartz brothers in Seattle around 1920. The company produced architectural cast stone for use in construction and trim of buildings. As Seattle grew, the company prospered, until the Great Depression of the 1930s. Though the company remained in business until around 1938, Pacific Stone's last major contract was the 24-story Exchange Building, completed in 1930.
This portrait of Pacific Stone Company employees was taken in front of the building on Leary Way and 8th Avenue NW in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. Several of the men are identified on the back of the original photo: David Lemon, modeler, age 19; Frank Lemon, modeler, age 60; V. P. William Tucker; Smitty, treasurer or accountant; Gilbert E. Tucker, Manager; John R. Pels, V. P.; Fred Rambordt, chief draftsman; Carson, draftsman; Shop Superintendent.
