Originally located at 122 S. Jackson Avenue in Seattle, the Crescent Manufacturing Company was established in 1883 as a small company which specialized in vanilla extract. The company expanded rapidly during the Klondike Gold Rush by selling proprietary spice packets to miners. Crescent Manufacturing grew with their novel creation of an imitation maple flavoring, Mapleine, which would not lose flavor over time or with temperature fluctuation. Mapleine debuted at the 1908 Puyallup Fair and rapidly achieved worldwide success. The company went on to boast the"most modern communication technology" in their 1927 factory at 657 Dearborn, which also featured a variety of spice mills and coffee roasting equipment.

This cookbook was published by the Crescent Manufacturing Company, whose baking powder "received the highest possible award [at the] Panama Pacific International Exposition San Francisco 1915." The inside cover contains a description of how baking powder acts chemically. Thirty pages of recipes for many cakes and breads utilize Crescent Baking Powder as a leavening agent, as well Crescent brand spices and flavoring. The back page contains an advertisement "Ask Us For Crescent Baking Powder, Bartlett's Grocery, 45 Sanitary Market.""
