Order an ImageLouis, Joseph, and Salvo Capeloto were three of the nine children of Moisin "Morris" and Behora "Dora" Capeloto. The Jewish family immigrated together from Rhodes to Washington State in 1912, around the time that Italy seized Rhodes from Turkey during the Italo-Turkish War, a significant precursor of the First World War.
In this image the three Capeloto brothers pose in the foreground outside their wholesale fruit and produce business at 1105 Western Avenue, in an area of downtown Seattle known at the time as "Produce Row." They are identified from left as Loue "Louis" Capeloto (1895-1974), holding grapes; Joseph Capeloto (1891-), kneeling; and Salvo Capeloto (1912-1993), holding bananas.
