In September 1957, the Seattle Parks Department opened the Handicapped Center, a cooperative program in the Mount Baker area that provided adults and children with arts, crafts, and social activities. The Center was supported by the city funds and outside donors.

Here, Naomi Priddy and Cora Schwieterman work on jewelry to be sold at the Handicapped Center’s Christmas Bazaar. Shelves of craft supplies can be seen behind the two women, and Mrs. Priddy’s purse hangs on the back of her wheelchair. The two-day sale sold items made by Center participants and supporters and provided needed funds for the Center’s ongoing programs.
