Order an ImageFor more than a century, Junior League members have confronted society’s most pressing issues and tackled its toughest problems, leaving an unrivaled legacy of reform. Since its inception in 1923, members of the Junior League of Seattle (JLS) have worked to improve our community through mission-driven projects and hands-on work with many Community Partners.
Starting in 1960, Junior League volunteers opened and operated The Wise Penny at 524 Broadway N., in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. Funds from the sale of “nearly new” clothing and household goods funded a pre-school enrichment program, the Children's Theater, the Northwest Art Project, and a pilot program, Children's Protective Services. Here, in July 1965, four volunteers stand in the doorway of The Wise Penny showing dresses and hats for their Fifth Anniversary Sale.
