On March 20, 1965, over 600 people marched from the First African Methodist Episcopal Church on 14th Avenue to a rally at the United States Courthouse in support of equal rights for Blacks, and in solidarity with civil rights marchers in Selma, Alabama. Rev. John Adams, pastor of the church, told the rally that "the problem of segregation and injustice is just as much here as it is in Selma. They are vigorously confronting their problem while we are going home and being complacent too much." Other speakers included Rev. Samuel McKinney of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Father John Lynch of the Catholic Interracial Council, and E. June Smith, president of the Seattle Chapter of the NAACP.
