In 1969, four men--E.J. Brisker, Larry Gossett, Joe Boyd and Richard Brown --founded the Soul Academy, A SEEK (Summer Emphasis on Education) joint program of Seattle Public Schools and the Model City program. The program was aimed at teaching Black dropouts in the Central District, with the intention of getting the students back into school. In addition to regular classes such as language arts and social studies, the student participated in Life class, where the young men could speak freely of the pressures and tensions of their lives.
