Tacoma-born author Frank Patrick Herbert, Jr. (1920-1986) was an American science fiction writer best known for the novel "Dune" and its five sequels. Though he became famous for science fiction, he was also a newspaper journalist, photographer, short story writer, book reviewer, ecological consultant and university lecturer. At the time this image was taken, Herbert was a reporter for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, where he worked from 1969 to 1972.

Roy Prosterman, Professor Emeritus of Law at the University of Washington, is the founder of Landesa (formerly the Rural Development Institute), an international nonprofit organization which works for land rights reform in impoverished countries. At the time this photo was taken, Prosterman was working on land reform in South Vietnam. Prosterman believed that diminishing land ownership by the populace was a prime cause of discontent, revolution, and war. His land reform program for South Vietnam in the early 1970s returned land ownership to 40% of the population, cut Viet Cong recruitment by 80%, and increased rice production. In 1974, Prosterman and Herbert collaborated on the documentary film "The Tillers: Political Dynamite," based on land reform field work they did in Pakistan, Vietnam, and other Third World countries.
