Hanukkah (or Chanukah) is the Jewish winter celebration known as the "festival of lights," marked by the nightly lighting of the menorah, prayers, and special foods. In this photo, three children stand on chairs to get a good view of Rabbi Abba Abrams lighting the far right candle on a menorah for the first night of Hanukkah in December 1961. The children are identified as Lisa Migdal, Nicolas Lehr, and Debbie Katz. The photo was probably taken at the Herzl Conservative Congregation, where Rabbi Abrams served beginning in 1960, after moving to Seattle from New York. Now named the Herzl-Ner Tamid Coservative Congregation, the synagogue was, and still is as of 2020, located at the corner of Spruce and 20th in Seattle's Central Area.
