Order an ImageThe assassination of minister and civil rights activist Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) on April 4 led to a nationwide wave of grief, demonstrations, and riots. Memorials were held across the country, and President Lyndon B. Johnson declared April 7 a national day of mourning.
In this image Rev. Dr. Samuel Berry McKinney (1926-) gives a eulogy for Dr. King, whom he met when they were both students at Morehouse College. Dr. McKinney was, for 40 years, the pastor at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Seattle, home to the oldest and largest African American congregation in the state of Washington.
