This photo shows a group of five University of Washington international students demonstrating a bamboo stick dance, possibly the Tinikling, a traditional Philippine folk dance. The dance may have been part of an annual traveling show put on by international students at UW and performed at various Washington state locations. The production was broken up into acts from different countries or regions, giving impressions of the cultures through songs, dances, and skits. The tour was part "cultural exchange" and part fundraiser, with students staying with host families while on tour, and raising money for tuition scholarships for graduates of Washington high schools.
The 1954 tour performed at UW on April 10, and this photo may have been taken shortly before that performance. Students and their home countries are, from left to right: Baldev Katara, Pakistan; Benicia Diokno and Jaime Narte, both from the Philippines; Balwant Singh, India; and Nina Corsilles, the Philippines.
