Seattle resident Fred Hutchinson, nicknamed Hutch, played baseball at Franklin High School. He signed with the Seattle Rainiers for the 1938 season and became the team's star player. Hutchinson was named Most Valuable Player after his first season and was sold to the Detroit Tigers in 1939. His career was cut short by cancer.
