Hen Sen Chin (1923-2006) was an internationlly known traditional Chinese herbalist who saw patients for 53 years at his office in the Chinatown International District, and later Beacon Hill. Arriving in Seattle at age 9 from Canton, China, he worked at restaurants and his uncle's laundry before following his passion to become a doctor. He graduated from Lingnan Herb School in Hong Kong at 20 years old, and eventually returned to Seattle, opening Hen Sen Herb Company at Eight Avenue and King Street in 1950. He practiced there for 42 years before moving the business to Beacon Hill. Hen Sen Chin reluctantly retired at 80 years old. Afterwards, his business was continued by his goddaughter May Tom, and as of 2021, Hen Sen Herbs Traditional Chinese Medicine still operates in Renton Washington, run by Hen Sen Chin's daughter, Juliana Chin Isogai.

This photograph was taken as part of a 1965 newspaper report about the effect of a recent fatal shooting on businesses in the Chinatown International District neighborhood. Hen Sen Chin was one of several Chinese business owners interviewed for the article.
