In 1958, the Highline School District completed an air raid shelter at Hazel Valley Elementary School. The basement cafeteria, shielded by concrete walls and earth was intended to protect the school children from the effects of a nuclear bomb blast. In May, 1958, Hazel Valley held its first air raid drill as part of a nationwide program, Operation Alert 1958. Everything went smoothly, and the children returned to their classrooms after the "all clear" signal.
