The University of Washington, founded in 1861 is one of the oldest public universities in the western United States. This view shows Union Bay and Husky Stadium at the top of the photo and the Health Sciences Building under construction on the shores of Portage Bay. The U.W. School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, and School of Pharmacy would eventually all be housed in the large maze-like complex. On the lower right of the photo, the Showboat Theatre is visible. Built in 1937 for the University of Washington with funding from the Work's Progress Administration, it resembles a Mississippi-style paddlewheeler and seats 220.
